Wu Chun to the rest of us, is no quitter, despite recent problems that prompted him to back out of the high-profile drama Absolute Boyfriend. The 32-year-old actor and memberof the pop group Fahrenheit just knows how to play his cards well, like the savvy businessman that he is back in his hometown. “I always want to challenge myself and do something that’s different,” he said in an exclusive interview, explaining his decision to establish a health club in Brunei and eventually join the entertainment business. He admits that he went into acting in 2005 just out of curiosity. “I wanted to do something that I thought was impossible.” The actor-singer was a model and fitness instructor before he was introduced in a brief role in KO One. By his second drama, Tokyo Juliet, he was already playing the male lead, but it was Hana Kimi that propelled him to fame, not only in Taiwan, but across Asia as Quan, a high jump athlete who was shy and quiet. Wu believes that this role is the closest to his real personality, especially since he was an athlete himself. He previously played for Brunei’s national basketball team. Dramas, films, albums, concerts and a lot of gossips later, Wu says he does not regret becoming an artist although the loss of privacy especially for his family has made him decide to step back a bit. “That’s something that’s always confused me and this will be the biggest reason for me to leave showbiz one day. Showbiz is really a complicated business and I don’t belong there. Work is OK because we all need to be professional but when I’m not working, I prefer life in Brunei.” Wu has spent most of his time in Bandar this year and only travels whenever he has to attend to commitments or shoot films. He clarified that he has not quit Fahrenheit and remains close to his recording company HIM, but he has left it to Fu Long to manage his career. “I told them I want to focus more on filming and have a little more time for myself and my family so I can come back here more often,” he explained. This means that Fahrenheit is sometimes reduced to three members whenever Wu cannot make it due to other commitments.

The artist is set to start filming the epic movie The Yang Clan directed by Bak-ming Wong that will co-star big Hong Kong actors like Louis Koo, Ekin Cheng and Raymond Lam, and Taiwanese actor-singer Vic Chou. “And then I need a coach to teach me because with Taiwanese stars, for example, their Mandarin is good. They just need to understand the script and then they can say it in their own words. If I say it in my own words, it would be broken Mandarin.
Right now, though, at least my pronunciation has improved,” he pointed out.
This is the reason, he noted, why he was forced to back out of Absolute Boyfriend, a drama that would have co-starred Korean actress Goo Hye-sun. The script has been delayed and there was no more time in his schedule to fit the drama because he has to start filming The Yang Clan and one more movie with a contemporary theme. This will be on top of promoting My Kingdom and Sunshine Angel an upcoming drama on GTV with actress-singer Rainie Yang.
Because of his work commitments, he had to semi-relocate to Taipei, but he notes that it was not the same without his family.
Add to that the stress of having to deal with the constant attention of the paparazzi, which had him running home at breakneck speed on one occasion so that they won’t discover where he lives.
These were the factors that led to his decision to step back from a grueling schedule and spend more time in Brunei, especially considering the lessons he learned from his mother’s death due to cancer eight years ago. “During my mother’s last eight months, we became so close. In the past, I never hugged or carried her but during those last months, she could no longer walk so I needed to carry her or massage her,” he said.

He wants to spend more time with his family, especially his father who is already 66 years old, that’s why he makes it a point to be home in Brunei whenever he does not have a shoot or other commitments.
“I’m already very happy that I have done so many things, I’m already very satisfied,” he went on. “That’s why, whichever road I choose, I don’t think I have a lot to lose. If I don’t do well in showbiz, I can come back to my family and I’d still be a very happy person.”
